Energy Savings
The chart
below shows where the most electricity is used in your household.
You can use this as a guideline when trying to cut the cost of
your electricity bill.
Approximately
50% of your energy goes to heating/cooling systems. Try keeping
the thermostat at 68 degrees in the winter and 78 degrees in the
summer. Remember to change the filters often.
Waterheaters
account for one-quarter of the energy used in a household. Set
the thermostat at 140 degrees if you have a dishwasher and 110-120
degrees if you don’t and install insulation around the tank.
Your kitchen
contains more electrical appliances than any other room. Set the
refrigerator between 36 and 40 degrees, the freezer should be
set no colder than zero. Operate your dishwasher only when you
have a full load. Substitute small appliances for large ones,
ex. use a toaster oven or microwave instead of the oven.
In the bathroom
the best place to conserve is the hot water tap. Make sure it
is not leaky. You could also install a shower flow restrictor
and take showers instead of baths.
The laundry
generally contains three significant energy consuming appliances
- the washer, the dryer and the iron. Launder only full loads
and wash in the coolest temperature possible.
The rest of
your house contains the remaining three percent. Make sure all
the lights and appliances are off when you leave the room.
